Top 14 Books of 2014

Happy New Year (almost). I anticipate an issue with my system when the numbers get higher. These are only from the book I read this year for the first time, not that they were necessarily released this year. As with last year, these are in no particular order.

  1. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: The third book in this series is out but I haven’t read it yet! The first is still my favourite out of the two I have read though they are both fantastic.
  2. Cress by Marissa Meyer: This is the third book in the Lunar Chronicles and this series keeps getting better and better. They’re fairytale retellings (kind of) with cyborgs and space travel and I am not explain this well at all. Just read it. Cinder is the first.
  3. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: I didn’t know what to expect from this novel, I went into it totally blind. I ended up really enjoying it! The characters are so good and the premise, while fantastical and made-up feels like it could have happened in a different place at a different time in our world.
  4. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare: Obviusly this was going to be on the list. I will read and adore anything this woman puts out.
  5. Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor: Again, this had to be on the list. An amazing conclusion to this series, though the way it ended there could have been another book. I don’t think she’s planning on writing one though, which is unfortunate becasue these are beautifully written.
  6. Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas: I need the next one! there isn’t even a title out! If you don’t know I just finished this one and it is the third book is an amazing series, Throne of Glass is the first one if you want to jump on this train.
  7. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi: This book really redeemed the series for me. After the second I was on the fence abut it but this pulled it way back up in my mind.
  8. World After by Susan Ee: The dark, twisted, creepiness continues and how I do love it. A great book to follow Angelfall, I love the dark sarcasm through out these novels.
  9. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers: Another assassin novel. This on also has fantasy elements but it’s more so trying to disguise itself as historical fiction.
  10. Endless Knight by Kresley Cole: Dead of Winter! It’s coming really soon! This is a very unique, post-apocalyptic/fantasy/paranormal story line. If you are looking for something that doesn’t really follow the norm it’s this.  first book is alright, second is amazing! It’s characters are based on tarot cards.
  11. Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout: Unlike many others on this list, the first book was my favourite and the there was a decline from there. I’m almost temped to tell you to stop after this book but I don’t remember how big a cliff hanger there was at the end of it. You might need to continue, like it might not work as a stand-alone.
  12. Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein): Elizabeth Wein. Just this author. he WW2 stories (her other one is Code Name Verity) are so real and heart-wrenching. You want to stop reading becasue its so horrific what she is describing but you want to finish at the same time becasue you want a happy ending for these characters, even though there isn’t always one.
  13. Allegiant by Veronica Roth: Very satisfying conclusion. I know lost of people hate the end but for me if it had ended any differently I would have been disappointing with the story, it wouldn’t have been true to character.
  14. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead: This is just a fun, fluffy read. I’m starting on the third one. With these books I find you can’t take them too seriously. You just have to jump in and enjoy the characters and not over think it too much.

What did you really love reading this year?

June Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

Hello darlings! Welcome to the wrap up! Let’s get right to it!

In Books:

Dreams of Gods and Monster by Laini Taylor ————— 5
City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare ——————- 5
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas —————————– 4
The Brokenhearted by Amelia Kahaney ——————— 3

I also bought City of Heavenly Fire the final book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and, as some of you will know becasue I had an angry rant, I will not be receiving it until mid-September becasue the people at Chapters.ca are assholes with terrible customer service. And I picked up Allegiant and Ignite Me  (finally) as well as a cute, fluffy summer read called The Juliet Club by Suzanne Harper. I’ve read it before and it  a really sweet contemporary romance taking place in Italy, perfect for a beach read. My darling brothers were sweet enough to get me a $50 gift card for book for a graduation present. ❤ I think that was a decent reading month considering! I will hopefully get those Book Rants up for you guys ASAP and this will probably be my last wrap up until the end of summer!

In Life:

The most obvious thing would be I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL! We had our ceremony and prom thing on the 28th, the ceremony was in the morning then I went and got my hair done and went to a friend of mines to hang out, take picture etc. before the limo came to take us to the dinner/dance.  I went with a guy friend and ended up being 9 of us in a limo, it was so much fun! We got some really cheesy grad photos and it didn’t rain! Hallelujah for small miracles! It still hasn’t really hit me yet, it still seems surreal. The after party was loads of fun with absolutely zero drama, which is impressive becasue 150 people who know they will likely never see each other again, most years there are at least some arguments ending in tears. But it was just a really fun time, we pitched a bunch of tents in someones backyard and had a bonfire going. I don’t even think anyone got that sick. The only bad part was that I lost my phone and no one has seen it and it poured yesterday so I’m pretty positive if anyone does find it it’s totally dead. My parents actually weren’t mad, which I was surprised at, but then again I pay for my cell myself so I guess they can’t be.

I had my last dance show ever as I next year I won’t be dancing becasue my studio only goes to 18. I think I’ll probably find a ballet class at the university becasue I need dance in my life! Maybe I’ll pick up yoga too, and there was a couple cool self-defense classes.

I think that’s pretty much all! Bye lovelies! Kisses.

May Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

Hi beauties! It’s June already! I write my last high school exam in 23 days and graduate in 28!

In Books:

I read nothing this month! That is so sad! I’m part way through DOGAM still and I started re-reading Inkheart and got about 3 chapters in. I’m so ashamed. I bought Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier, I only owned Sapphire Blue so now I have 2! I will buy the last one, eventually. I don’t think I’ve ever read no books in a month. It’s been pretty crazy though, I am graduating in less than a month and finals start in 2 weeks.

In Life:

My friend/Lab partner spilt  Sodium Hydroxide on my arm. I don’t recommend that. The pH was 13.88 and that melts your skin. I still have a bruise from it. I’m not sure why on earth it bruised, wouldn’t have been my prediction but it did. It was a ugly rash that turned into a bruise that’s been there for 2 weeks. It doesn’t hurt anymore so it all good. It was an experience. I have also (possibly) fractured my wrist which would explain why it has been giving me so much trouble in the past year-ish. I just never saw a Dr. until now. I still need to get x-rays done to make sure. Regardless my hand is in a brace and typing (among other things) is very hard.

That’s really all I feel up to writing, I seriously can’t move my left wrist at all!

April Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

Hello my darlings! Happy May! I myself am celebrating with a pajama day and hot tea as there is currently 40cm of snow on the ground and more falling. I bet some of you think I’m joking, but I’m really not.

In Books:

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi ———————– 5
World After by Susan Ee ————————– 4.5
Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier —————– 3
Fracture Me (Novella) by Tahereh Mafi ——- N/A
I am half way through Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor and it is really good! But for the past week and a half I have just had no energy to read and DOGAM is one of those books that you cannot read if you aren’t 100% into it becasue it will be confusing and you won’t get as much out of it. Apart from DOGAM and World After which I technically bought in December/January thought they just arrived, I only bought one book. Entwined by Heather Dixon. I really love this book! I’m almost positive I have a book rant about it, I’ve read it a few times but I only just found myself a beautiful hardcover copy.

In Life:

I have been very busy this week. On Thursday I had tickets to the Alberta Ballet to see their new show “Class Acts” which is a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood. It was spectacular. I love the 40s/50s especially the entertainment side. The music was just better! People could really sing. Ella Fitzgerald is my jam right now.Yesterday I went to a party hosted by a friend of mine and I was supposed to head to another friend of mine’s girlfriend’s 18th birthday party after but the amount of snow canceled that. Which worked out becasue I’m not sure I would have had the energy for the second one anyway! Today I need to do homework but I haven’t. I was sleeping and watching TV. I’m an awful student most of the time. Tomorrow I go to visit my chemistry tutor and I am so lost again in that class! (probably due to the fact I am an awful student because of a fore mentioned reasons.)

Class registration of university started Thursday I spent 4 hours trying to get my schedule to work! I never thought it would be so difficult! My friends then pointed out that I had class solid from 11-3 and asked if I considered eating to be important. Oops. Lunch hadn’t even crossed my mind.

That’s all I can think of right now! Bye lovelies!

March Wrap-Up!

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65In Books (Out of 5)

Grave Mercy by Robin Lafevers ——————————— 4.5
Origin by Jennifer L. Armentout———————————  3.5

In Life

I have received my high school diploma in the mail! I can just stop attending school now! I can’t actually. I wish. I just have credits from extra curricular activities and finished the required courses to graduate, but I need the courses I am currently taking for university. My little bro turned 15, so that was a fun time.

I GOT ACCEPTED INTO UNIVERSITY FOR NURSING!!! (conditionally) STILL AH! SO EXCITED!

There really is nothing for me to say. My life is pretty much school, dance, school, work, school, ski with random punctuation of time when I can be with friends/my boyfriend which isn’t nearly as much as I would like it to be.  Pretty much limited lunch dates and occasionally a random couple hours on Wednesday or Thursday after school. Ces’t la vie. I’ll take what I can get!

My ballet costume is gorgeous! It’s purple romantic tutu with sparkles and short peasant sleeves. I think our song is by Mozart, but I can’t remember. New York, New York by Frank Sinatra is our tap song  and I can’t for the life of me recall what Beth and my’s contemporary dance is called. It’s cool though, super creepy marionette dolls. I love it!

February Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

Hello darlings! Seriously all I accomplished this month was re-reading. I got about halfway through re-reading another 4 or so books but then I didn’t finish any of them.

In Books (all ratings out of 10)

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder ————- 9.5 (re-read)
Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder ————– 9 (re-read)
Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder —————– 8 (re-read)

I bought my graduation dress and ohmygod it’s so pretty! I don’t physically have it yet but I bought it an I’m so excited! The little girl in me was freaking out playing dress up.  Its a silver, floor length a-line charmeuse dress with a corset style lace up back. Like so but without the train.

JJHouse.com is where I ended up getting it, I cannot recommend them enough! The customer service is fantastic, I was so impressed.

That’s it for this wrap up, bye! Kisses!

January Wrap-up!

In Books (all ratings out of 10)

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald ——————– 10 (Re-read for school)
Rose Under Fire
by Elizabeth Wein ————————- 9.5
Endless Knight by Kresley Cole —————————— 9.5
Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout ————————- 9.5
Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout —————————– 9.5
Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout —————————— 9.5
The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan ————– 8.5
Vixen by Jillian Larkin —————————————- 6

I am  done Vixen, Onyx and Opal but I’m behind on writing reviews. Sorry y’all! They’re coming! I actually had a decent reading month, I guess to make up for my terrible one in December. And I bought more books…I have a problem! I never used to buy books so often!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas: I don’t know much about this novel, all I know is it’s about this girl in an assassin competition to find the best killer to be the King’s personal assassin. It was in the bargain section at Chapters, hardcover for $5 and I needed it!
Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers: Again this was a bargain book and I know very little about it, but the cover is cool and I think it’s another one about an assassin but she’s trained by nuns? Maybe? We’ll see.
Poison Study, Magic Study and Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder: I have talked about all these books, I’ll leave a link to my first one HERE if you want to know what it’s about and I just worship this series. Particularity the first one and it was just so tragic that I didn’t own them! So I fixed that.
And I bought a novella on my iPad, “Fracture Me” by Tahereh Mafi and this goes with the Shatter Me trilogy. It is 2.5 so after Unravel Me, before Ignite Me (coming out next month). Anyway the last novella I read for this series turned out to be very, very, very important for the actual novel, which is rare. But I figured  should probably read this one before Ignite Me just in case.

I have not gotten my copy of World After ( by Susan Ee) that I ordered after Christmas yet and a little annoyed about that! I feel like they aren’t going to ship it until my pre-order comes out which kinda sucks. Normally they ship things separately if needed.

In Life

Finals and studying were pretty much all that was going on, sooooo… my exciting life as a teenager showcased! I hung out with some people and did some stuff over the exam break and I worked. Don’t die of excitement now! My second semester started yesterday I’m now taking biology, chemistry and a general science and I have a spare so ALL THE SCIENCE (minus physics but whatever…we don’t count physics… it’s not cool enough to play with us, ok? It’s like a math.) I have mentioned this but I am taking ski lessons for double black/out of bounds runs and that’s really fun. My instructor is great, nice, funny guy though he is very tough but challenges are good!

That’s it for January! Bye Everyone! Kisses

November Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

In Books (all ratings out of 10)

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee ————————– 10 (re-read for School)
Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier ———————————— 9
A Man for all Seasons by Robert Bolt (Play) —————– 8 (for school)
The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux ————————- 8 (for school)
Allegiant by Veronica Roth ————————————— 7.5

I also bought 5 books, brand new, hardcover for $5 each from Chatpers.ca, hooray for sales! Vixen by Jillian Larkin, Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr, Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor and Poison Princess by   Kresley Cole. I have read them all before, recommend them all highly! If you liked Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr you NEED to read Carnival of Souls (they aren’t related so don’t worry if you haven’t read Wicked Lovely.) Vixen takes place in the 1920’s and it’s fabulous if you like that era, which I do. And I just talked about Sapphire Blue.

And Life

Not much has happened really. I am still dating the guy I talked about during my last wrap up and that’s going pretty well. I haven’t heard from any universities and I probably won’t until February (I am a nervous wreck about this! Seriously!) I have a bookshelf and that’s pretty great. I just got it and it’s over flowing! I have two layers of books on the top shelf, I need another one! What an amazing problem to have!  I have sprained my wrist. Well not actually it’s tendinitis (tendon opposed to ligament) but for all intents and purposes, I have sprained it. I injured it mountain biking in the summer and it never healed properly and then I fell on it in dance class (We were doing improve in Contemporary and it looked really cool so it all good). Anyway it’s my right hand which is my dominant hand so it’s kind of annoying. I can’t write  or type too much or else it starts hurting really badly and because I’m in school not using it isn’t an option so I just wrap it and deal with it. I know that will make it take forever to heal but I cannot just stop writing and typing.  Ice. Ice and ibuprofen.  I went to the doctor yesterday though, for an unrelated reason but I brought my wrist up as well.

October Wrap-Up

books 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperbeautiful_65

Hey beauties! Ok so if you didn’t notice, the TBR thing isn’t going very well. Because I either don’t have time or (more likely) I am a bit of an impulsive reader. I went to the library and saw some books, knew I had wanted to read them a picked them up even though they weren’t on my list and oops! So This is going to change slightly into just a wrap up and it’s now not just going to be about books but also a bit of what I did in my life during the month.

So reading! (All out of 10)

Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon —————– 10
Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier —————————————————– 9
A Curse Dark As Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce ————————- 7.5

And I have gotten part way through both Allegiant by Veronica Roth and Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier. I was part way through the latter when my friend let me read her brand new copy of Allegiant so obviously I started that right away so neither of them are done.

And in Life

I started dating this really amazing guy! Our first date was last week to Gravity (a GREAT movie) and tomorrow we are going to grad kickoff together (Giant Halloween party with all the grade 12s). He is just such a great guy! He’s so sweet and I can’t even, I’m so happy! I really want it to work out! We can have a chat, right? We’re all friends? I’m actually so terrified right now. It’s only been a week but I like him a lot and it’s nerve wracking. Don’t get me wrong, super fun, but scary! I have constant butterflies, this hasn’t happened before with other guys and boyfriends so I am really, really crazy nervous.  In other news I have applied to 3 universities so far and I am so very nervous about that! My average was 88% and my competitive average was 89% which is the low end of what nursing needs so I am just praying now! And no, I’m not religious but it can’t hurt! 🙂  Um…I dyed my hair blonde after an unfortunate series of events that I told you about earlier. And for Halloween I am a 1920s flapper girl, so yeah! It’s fun. Life is crazy but good and I am just really happy right now but also so nervous and just all the emotions!

September Wrap-Up and October TBR

books-and-heart-jpeg (1)

Hey lovelies! September has gone by and now it’s time to briefly overview what it was I read and how it stacked up. Also it’s time to choose books from my TBR jar for me to read come October! (All Ratings out of 10)

  1. Dracula by Bram Stoker —————————————— 9
  2. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi ———————————— 9
  3. A Million Suns by Beth Revis ———————————— 7.5
  4. Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan ——— 6.5

So I didn’t read all the books on my September TBR but I did read 4 books. I count that as success. Now for my October TBR. I will again draw out 2 books from the jar and then pick two of my own!

  1. A Curse as Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C Bunce
  2. Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn

And for my picks, first and foremost I will finish Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon which I have started. I will also finish off the Across the Universe trilogy with Shades of Earth by Beth Revis, and Allegiant is coming out! If you don’t know it’s the third book in the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth and I have to go pre-order my copy sometime soon.
