books-and-heart-jpeg (1)

Hey lovelies! September has gone by and now it’s time to briefly overview what it was I read and how it stacked up. Also it’s time to choose books from my TBR jar for me to read come October! (All Ratings out of 10)

  1. Dracula by Bram Stoker —————————————— 9
  2. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi ———————————— 9
  3. A Million Suns by Beth Revis ———————————— 7.5
  4. Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan ——— 6.5

So I didn’t read all the books on my September TBR but I did read 4 books. I count that as success. Now for my October TBR. I will again draw out 2 books from the jar and then pick two of my own!

  1. A Curse as Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C Bunce
  2. Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn

And for my picks, first and foremost I will finish Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon which I have started. I will also finish off the Across the Universe trilogy with Shades of Earth by Beth Revis, and Allegiant is coming out! If you don’t know it’s the third book in the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth and I have to go pre-order my copy sometime soon.

Dreams of Gods and Monsters! We Have a Cover!

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor is the third and final book of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy and the cover was just released!

taylor_godsandmonstersIt’s so beautiful, but I have to admit, Days of Blood and Starlight is my favourite cover still. The book comes out in April 2014. If you haven’t started this series go do so! Its high fantasy and really faced paced and after you get used to the world you see it’s woven really tightly and that there are no holes. The characters are funny and kick ass, the story is kick ass. Its is just a fantastic read. I’m so excited for this book! All the emotions!

Planning Ahead? What is this madness?

This has no relevance, I just enjoyed how it looked.

Hello beauties! So today I went to a university fair with one of my friends. (Aren’t we such good children? Planning for our future and being all productive like? I know. I’m frightened about this new development too.) Anyway, there actually were very few universities there, none of my three that I want to go to (U of C, UBC or UPEI) but they will all be coming to my school shortly so it doesn’t really matter. But there was this booth for a program called SWAP. Essentially what it is, is a company who helps university students find summer jobs in other parts of the world. So you are traveling and seeing the world for the summer but also making money. You pick a country then they set you up with a flight and two night accommodation there and during those two-three days they help you set up a cellphone, visa, bank account, find a long term place to stay, set you up with your job and give you the run down on how things work. I thought this was just such a great idea and I intended to do it for the summer after my first year of university. London, Wales or Ireland? What do you think? It’s a Canadian thing so I don’t know how many of you are Canadian, but if you are then go check out their website! I will link it HERE. They take people ages 18-35 and you don’t have to be attending university. If you aren’t Canadian, I’m sure there are other companies that do similar things so go Google it! Also, more travel news, my parents have also told me they are taking me on a trip as a graduation/18th birthday present anywhere I want. Spain, Italy or Greece? I am torn equally with all three. So opinions, please!

There! My future life is all organized, the present is a bit chaotic and not together but details! Hmm, what else can I tell you about today? *taps lower lip* I bought onions and potatoes at the farmers market from an attractive young Amish man. Oh and I cut and dyed my hair, both by myself a couple nights ago. It was so nerve wracking! I wanted my bangs done but my hairdresser kept being busy when I was free, so my friends told my to cut them myself and I did, but all I had were those curved nail scissors. So stressful! But they turned out okay, I think. For the dye I put in a red steak, it turned out kind of pinkish but whatever. My life really isn’t that interesting so I will leave this off here. Bye guys! Kisses!

Book Rant: Unravel Me

GENRE: YA, Dystopian

Hello! Today we a chatting about Unravel Me which is the second book in Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me Trilogy. If you have not read Shatter Me it is about this 17 year old girl, Juliette, who when she touches people they die. And she has been locked away in solitary confinement for a long time while the outside world crumbles under the leadership of The Reestablishment. If you haven’t read Shatter Me I’m going to ask you to leave so nothing gets spoiled. Now if you have just read Shatter Me you NEED to read “Destroy Me” which is the novella that comes between these two. Novellas usually are optional but this one should be mandatory, They should have just printed it in the front of Unravel Me or in the back of Shatter Me because if you don’t read it you miss a lot of character development and things in Unravel Me won’t make as much sense and you won’t get as much out of it. Anyway, so we are at Omega Point and Juliette is trying to harness her energy, she’s tying to learn how to control her power. All the while war is creeping closer and Juliette is conflicted. If both sides want you as a weapon, who is right? And what is she willing to do for Adam’s safety and the safety of her new friends? This is a really quick read I know I didn’t give you a lot to go off of, but it’s hard to explain this book without spoiling anything! Just go read it if you haven’t then join us and we shall discuss. Spoilers past here!

So at the beginning of the book Juliette is being very annoying again. A lot of whining and bitching. Lots of crying and lots of completely relying on Adam and being very weak. Not an awful lot of character development as far as that goes. It’s really annoying. She’s “oh I’m so lonely! No one here likes me, blah, blah, blah” and she’s not even trying to talk to people. Yeah. You’re dangerous and you have some serious issues. But if you aren’t going to put in an effort you are getting zero sympathy from me. Am I being to hard on her? Am I? But am I really? She is totally dependent on Adam and you know what, fine. He’s the first person who could touch you but if you hadn’t closed yourself off so much, having to left him go wouldn’t have been such a big deal. Kenji was my favourite person in the world when he gave her that speech telling her to grow the hell up. She really needed that slap in the face and I’m just sorry that she’s a fictional character and I couldn’t have been me.  She says like 10 different times that shes sick of being weak and she’s going to be brave and every time she just goes right back. So this whole ending where it sounds like she’s going to set the world on fire, I will believe it when I see it. She just has so much potential.

Okay so Adam’s “gift” where he can disable other people powers. One of the few parts of this book where I was behind Juliette 120% was when she broke up with Adam because of this. It was responsible and Juliette we have seen to be a very selfish character and this was very unselfish of her. I think that Adam needed to put himself in her position. If he was hurting her by being with her, no matter what he felt, he would stay away from her. She just doesn’t want to hurt him, she refuses to take that risk. The problem came from the fact that she relied so heavily on Adam. She never learned how stand by herself. And that’s where I think Warner comes in. He challenges her and in turn she challenges him to be a better person. Where Adam just tried to protect her all the time and carries her and Juliette is literally weakening him.

Let’s talk about the Adam-Juliette relationship. Now this happen in these YA books a lot, where there’s a couple and one of them has a secret and the other asks what it is, the first person won’t tell them and then they just give up. It happens all the time and it is so unrealistic! Or maybe I’m just weird. But I would demand the truth. Whatever it is is clearly hurting Adam and it clearly involved her so “I can’t tell you” isn’t a valid answer. Yes I know she want to respect his privacy, but you’re a couple. If you cannot tell each other when something is clearly wrong, then your relationship has failed. Its not a relationship, it’s a “Oh you’re hot” and “Oh you can touch me” and they just make out.  We never get to see them talk in this book except when Juliette’s telling him that they have to break up. I know they don’t get a lot of time together but when you do see each other your immediate reaction doesn’t have to be that you start taking your clothes off.  I still like Adam and I just feel really sorry for Warner. I don’t like him yet but I no longer hate him. He’s just this monster because that’s what his father made him, he doesn’t know how to do anything else. I don’t want either of them to be with Juliette actually. I think she needs to learn how to be on her own, not in solitary confinement, but interacting in a group of people without having just one person to lean on. She’s like one of those girl who cannot handle being single, they always need a boyfriend. Figure out your own shit, make some friends, learn to trust people and then look into the whole romantic relationship thing. I said in my Shatter Me book rant that I thought they had rushed into this relationship and they did. Juliette needs to figure out who she is because she’s been locked away since she was a kid essentially. She never got to discover what kind of a person she is.

We get Juliette snapping at Anderson and shooting out both his legs and Kenji stops her from killing him. Then we get that Adam and Warner are brothers!  So Anderson must have a gift too. All three of his kids have one. (James’ gift was just kind of just thrown at us, I hope that transition gets smoothed over a bit in the next book.) Given that their gift involved as defense mechanisms against Anderson I honestly think James’ is the most effective. Warner is like that kid who when you would play superheros on the playground would be “I just take other people powers.” There was always one and everyone always got so mad at that kid.  I really hope we get Warner finding out that he is related to Adam in the next one because that will be interesting. I also want Juliette to learn about Warner because we (having read “Destroy Me”) know all these little details about Warner and how is isn’t really this monster he pretends to be. He’s more of this broken boy who is trying to survive. But Juliette is still judging Warner for these things he’s done like when in Shatter Me he shoots a soldier through his head, we earned that he was actually an abusive husband and Warner killed him to protect his wife and kids but Juliette doesn’t know these things because Warner doesn’t want to look weak.

What made me laugh was when they were taking Warner back as hostage: “Warner’s head is on my lap. His face is smooth and calm and peaceful in a way I’ve never seen it and I almost reach out to stroke his hair before I remember exactly how awkward this actually is. Murderer on my lap. Murderer on my lap. Murderer on my lap.” I love the scene with Juliette and James where James is mad at her then after Juliette explains he says he’s sorry he was mad at her. It’s so cute. James is my favourite character. Him and Kenji. And then Warner and the puppy, it was the sweetest thing! I think that was mentioned in “Destroy Me” from Warner’s POV.

Then we have Chapter 62. Warner and Juliette are making out, getting all hot and heavy and Warner has this sweet moment when he’s opening up to Juliette and asks her to call him Aaron and what does she say? Adam. Warner is crushes because he’s opening up which he has never done before and she says the wrong name! That is the meanest thing she could have done. As I said earlier, I don’t want them together but that was just so brutal. Juliette just hurts everyone. She’s hurting Adam by being with Warner and Warner by still loving Adam.

So all the while was have this war going on. And honestly I’m not really interested in it. There are these 10 or so characters we know and I just want to see how their story plays out, If the world gets fixed I’ll call that a bonus. I’m not sure how they are going to resolve world issue this in one book anyway.  Just switching topics real fast, when Juliette gets shot, how did Warner get the girls there that fast? Assuming Anderson has decent aim and he was aiming so she would die slowly, she still only had 2 minutes tops. Did Anderson kidnap the girls too? No matter, I’m really glad that Warner saved her life. It all worked out.

Overall I really liked this book! We started to see Juliette grow but we need way more of it. Ignite Me is the third book and it comes out February 2014. I am so excited for it! We have a cover!

It’s so beautiful! Also, also, I saw this on Goodreads:

I was excited about that. So that is all for now, bye guys!

Book Rant: A Million Suns

10345927BOOK RATING: 65%

GENRE: YA, Science-fiction

Hi lovelies! Today we are discussing the second book in Beth Revis’ Across The Universe trilogy, A Million Suns. If you have not started this series the first book – Across the Universe – is about a girl named Amy who gets cryogenically frozen  to go on this spaceship to a new planet. But someone wakes her up 50 years early, almost killing her in the process.  Stuck on the spaceship Godspeed, Amy teams up with the leader-to-be, Elder, and tries to find her potential killer, before they get to her parents too.  If you haven’t read the first book you can shoo for now. In A Million Suns three months have past since Amy was woken up and Elder is now the leader of the ship, with no Phydus. While trying to discover a way to fix the engine, Elder discovers a shocking truth about the ship. Once again he and Amy are struggling to solve a mystery but this time everyone on Godspeed is at stake. All the while the ship is descending into a state of chaos as the once-drugged passengers realize they have freewill but they lack the regulation – both self and by others – that Amy took for granted back on Earth.  Spoilers past this point!

Now I don’t read a lot of Sci-fi for a reason. I get really frustrated with it really easily and I get really distracted while reading it. But this book picked up about half way through. The first half was painfully slow but then it just hit the ground running! I kind of had a hard time imagining Orion sitting down with himself and thinking “Damn, I think Elder and Eldest are on to me. What do i do? Oh I know! I’ll make a scavenger hunt for Amy!” I know it happens in a lot of books, but it never seems realistic. Doc at the end seemed really out of character as he has been established in Across the Universe and in this book. I didn’t see that coming. It seemed to psychopathic while Doc was portrayed as really level headed and rational.

For the first half of this book I was having a Bitterblue relationship with Elder. (glad they kept the name, that would have been slightly confusing). He was trying to be leader and i just got really sick of reading about him. It was at that point when I was “Oh what are you doing?!” When he’s in the library with Bartie there were so many arguments he could have made! Also, for the record Mary Antoinette never actually said “Let them eat cake.”On the other hand I guess most of the arguments I would have made you have been based around my knowledge of “Sol-earth”, knowledge which Elder obviously doesn’t have.  What I found weird is after Elder talks to the Shippers about the property of inertia, yet when they tell his the they have stopped he doesn’t think its strange. He just said that even if the engines were broken, they would keep moving because there is nothing to stop them is space. Therefore if the engines were shut off, they would still be moving. The only way they would be still if if some calculated the trust the would need against the forward movement to make them stop but not so much that they would then start going backwards, which would be almost impossible I imagine. Or if they were in orbit. Now for us, I’m pretty sure that would be basic knowledge. Even if you weren’t highly learned in physics. I think it was covered in grade 4 or 5 and if you thought about it for a second, it makes sense. Elder may not have this knowledge already in him, but clearly its on-hand in books. Besides which, the Shippers should know this stuff. So if someone said “we’re stopped” they’re immediate reaction should have been, “no, we can’t be.” I just found it so backwards that right after Elder explain inertia he didn’t question the “we’re stopped.”

What I though for most of this book was that they were like an “experiment” to see how humans would survive in a totally isolated biosphere and then something went wrong and they lost connection. Or maybe they deliberately cut connection but they could still tell what was going on or something. But I appear to be wrong on that. Darn, that would have been interesting to see how they would react. I would be pissed. The giant flaw in my plan of course was, why would they bother freezing people.

What I am confused about is, is Sol-Earth different from Centauri- Earth? Are they different planets? Or the same earth just hundred of years later? Because I thought they were different but Amy keeps referring to Centauri-Earth as “home.” I foresee some issues because humans are going to be the alien invaders. And as we know from science-fiction, it usually doesn’t end well for the invaders. I think if they pull a genocide kind of thing I’m going to have a lot of trouble sympathizing with the people off Godspeed. I’m reading Shades of Earth likely next month and I’m really curious about how this is all going to go down.

Bye my darlings! Thanks for your patience as this took me forever to read! Kisses.

Well…This week sucked.

Hey my darlings. So good news, bad news. The good news is that I finished A Million Suns yesterday before I went out. Yay! The bad news is the I had to go to the ER via ambulance today part way through the race I was running. I’m ok, just pumped full of more medicine. A spider bit my eye while I was running and both my eyes swelled shut in minutes. Not going to lie, it was really scary not being able to see and because this race was cross country we were in the woods and I hiked out blind. I wasn’t alone though, I had just met up with my mom and her friend Pam who were also in the race and they got a volunteer to help lead me to the highway. And I’m home now and the swelling has gone down so I can see again but my face is still really puffy. I am just highly unlucky this week. first me teeth being partially knocked out, then I caught a cold (which I still have) and now this event. Hopefully next week will be a lot better. it can’t really be worse, right?

Bye guys, Love you all.

Life Update

Hey guys!

So I am just going to give you a quick update on my life! I am a little over halfway done A Million Suns and almost all of that reading came from last night. On Tuesday night through a slightly embarrassing series of events, I partially knocked out one of my front teeth so I have been on three types of medication ever since. Pretty much it’s too inflamed at the moment for them to fix it so I am on pain killers, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics and I go back to the dentist on Tuesday to get all fixed up (hopefully!) So because of all this I am still behind in reading (sad face) but I managed to get more or less caught up with school. Yay!

My Social teacher is still being a jerk, he did pretty much the same thing again. But I am understanding Calculus and English is wonderful as always though I have tons of work in both. And drama is drama so obviously it’s amazing. I got moved up into a higher level of ballet (HURRAY!) so I am actually doing stuff that is at my level which is great. Sadly, one of my best friends is in the hospital for surgery. She has a cyst on her small intestine but they got her in for surgery right away (they found it 2 days ago) so she will be fine. I am so glad for our medical system right now. In very minor friend drama, one of my guy friends is being very smothering but that’s it.

I am going out with some girl friends tonight and I may or may not be in that race I mentioned last week which is tomorrow. I’ll see how I’m feeling. And Sunday I work again. So, that is my life as it stands. I’m so behind on my reading and I’m terribly sorry! I may have to move one of or maybe both Unravel Me and Lady Audley’s Secret to October. I own them both now though so its not a huge problem. We’ll see how it goes. I WILL finish A Million Suns this weekend though!  I will have a book rant for it up on Monday, if not you can all come and get me. It’s getting really intense though! I’m going to do some math then read a few more chapters before I head out.

And that’s it! Bye lovelies! Kisses!
